What is Internal Bleaching?

Internal bleaching is a whitening procedure that whitens your tooth from the inside. The process used for internal bleaching is more intensive than conventional cosmetic whitening alternatives.

Internal bleach isn’t used for whole mouth cosmetic teeth whitening; the procedure is performed only on teeth with internal causes contributing to their discoloration. We frequently recommend it for teeth that have undergone root canals.

One of the side effects of a root canal is darkening or staining of the tooth. If saliva, blood, or bacteria enter the tooth, the material will break down and darken the tooth. Most cosmetic whitening procedures only whiten the outer surfaces of your teeth. Whitening the surface of a tooth treated with a root canal won’t improve its coloration because the cause of the staining (the decaying material) is on the inside of the tooth.

The process for internal bleaching opens your tooth, removes the cause of your discoloration, and applies the bleaching agent inside of your tooth. It will remain inside of your tooth for anywhere from a few days to a couple of weeks, depending on the severity of your tooth’s discoloration. You can also repeat the bleaching process if you’re not happy with your results.

What can you expect from Internal Bleaching?

Internal bleaching may first require a root canal if there’s new diseased or damaged pulp within the tooth. If the tooth has already undergone a successful root canal, we create a small hole on its back surface.

The hole allows entry into the tooth’s interior so that we can remove decaying material and insert the bleaching agent. You’ll need to return for a follow-up appointment so we can assess the results from your internal bleaching. Once you’re satisfied with the color of your tooth, we’ll fill the hole and seal your tooth. It’s normal to experience a little sensitivity or discomfort after internal bleaching.

What are the benefits of Internal Bleaching?

Internal bleaching is an effective whitening solution for tooth stains that won’t respond to conventional cosmetic whitening procedures.

The procedure restores your smile

If your tooth discoloration affects your self-esteem, internal bleaching addresses the discoloration and restores your smile, confidence, and appearance. The procedure is more cost-effective than removing the discolored tooth and replacing it with an implant.

Internal Bleaching works on dead teeth

Teeth that are damaged due to trauma or infection may die due to a lack of blood flow. Over time, saliva and bacteria can enter your tooth and cause it to appear darker than your other tooth. Internal bleaching addresses this discoloration so that you’re comfortable keeping your tooth.

You can use internal bleaching with other cosmetic bleaching treatments

It’s possible to combine internal bleaching with cosmetic external bleaching treatment to remove stains from the surface of your teeth to achieve your desired results. Want to learn more about internal bleaching? Contact us today to get started.
